American olive oil expert Alexandra Kicenik Devarenne spoke with me on a recent visit to Greece. Suggesting “Greek olive oil hasn’t made the mark it deserves in the US market,” she discussed its status in the USA -- surprisingly “underappreciated” and mostly in an “ethnic niche” – and shared ideas about breaking into the American market.

Very fond of Greece and interested in Greek culture, Devarenne hopes Americans will soon realize that carefully produced and bottled Greek extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) “is a great product” that is generally “a great value” for its high quality. While she is “always happy to see Greek olive oil getting positive attention,” she says “it still amazes me that most Americans are barely aware of Greek olive oil,” although they may be able to name some Italian brands.

In the USA, Greek olive oil has tended to be “the brand that’s sold at the deli” or in the Greek community. “The Greek deli that carries groceries – that’s one place to find Greek olive oil -- and occasionally in supermarkets, depending on the region.” It may also show up in a specialty store, but “no one’s been able to plant a flag” for Greek olive oil on a larger scale. She hopes that is changing.

Currently a consultant and educator at CalAthena, “a company dedicated to educating consumers and improving the quality of olive oil by working with producers” during all phases of the production, evaluation, sales, and marketing processes, Devarenne also writes about and judges olive oils, serves on the advisory board of the UC Davis Olive Center, and volunteers with the non-profit Extra Virgin Alliance, an international group she co-founded with Paul Miller that educates consumers and celebrates wonderful olive oil and extra conscientious companies. She has also worked on research and outreach at the University of California Cooperative Extension.

Breaking Into the American Market

In Devarenne’s opinion, breaking into the American market “requires extreme seriousness and a lot of money,” and it is not easy, especially for a small company without a good connection in the USA. However, with a good connection, such as family in the USA, or at least “someone on the ground in the US representing their product,” a small company might find a “limited but cozy market in the US.” An importer is not enough. “Your importer is not able to promote your brand the way you would promote it, because they’ll have hundreds of other products. You must also work to promote your brand: call, visit, sample, work.”

Devarenne believes a small Greek producer needs a “relentless and well executed direct to consumer campaign to break in” somewhere in the United States. “I would look at the Greek community in the USA as my first chance to see what’s going on.” What’s most important is to carefully “choose a market. Forget the US – it’s like talking about the continent of Africa – way too big. Choose a place where you have some access or connections, or do some research” to determine the best location.

It’s crucial to wisely select and fully explore a particular area. Devarenne suggests finding money to go there, look at the stores’ shelves, visit the restaurants, taste the oils, check their prices—come to a good understanding of the market in that location. Then it might be possible to get into some fairly small niche—maybe a relationship with a distributor or importer—or sell direct to a deli, restaurant or specialty store. She adds, “from there you can branch out as you build a local following.”

Devarenne does not recommend aiming for an American supermarket, since such stores ask companies to pay slotting fees just to get their products on the shelf, they usually deal with a limited number of distributors, and that involves more middlemen, meaning more price mark-ups along the way. To succeed, she argues, a small business needs to be “creative, go direct to your consumer – because you can’t afford to have a bunch of people touch” your olive oil as middlemen who want to take their share of its price. 

Devarenne emphasizes that restaurants are really important places. “If you can find a chef that loves your olive oil and get them to use your olive oil on the menu,” that would be wonderful. “Chefs are incredibly important as olive oil ambassadors. A chef is gonna take your baby and present it in exactly the right outfit. It’s gonna be beautiful; from the very first experience, the customer is going to love it.”

Of course, for that to benefit an olive oil company, customers need to know which olive oil they’re eating. Devarenne advocates mentions of olive oil varieties and brands on restaurant menus. Olive oil producers who achieve that should also be sure their olive oil is available in a deli or specialty store near the restaurant, or even at the restaurant itself. So a restaurant patron can say “Oh my God this is so delicious – I want to eat more of it!” You want to make that both possible and convenient.

Producers and Exporters Eagerly Await Ratification of EU-Mercosur Deal

"The trade deal will eliminate tariffs on both Mercosur and E.U. exports and creates the world's largest bloc of olive oil consumers and producers." There is no mention of how this agreement with Europe, Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay will impact Greece, but Greek exporters may want to consider it.
